GEPI was formally established in January 2011 by a group of 13 prominent business leaders in Indonesia. GEPI is also part of a wider global initiative called the Global Entrepreneurship Program (GEP), which grew from an initiative of President Obama and former Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Since then, it has been a core program at the U.S. Department of State with the purpose of promoting entrepreneurship as a key pillar of economic development among developing countries.
