PROBLEM Our forests are disappearing, many people are malnourished and our inefficient production systems produce waste with little productivity. We are haunted by the problem of deforestation. Forests are being burned for monoculture oil palm plantations. This creates huge carbon emissions, destroys ecosystems, causes flooding and soil erosion, and negatively affects the health of people in the surrounding area. Malnutrition is also a problem; 38% of children are stunted, they get an average of 16 grams of protein per person, while the average European gets 80 grams. This is a paradox because we are located in one of the most blessed locations in the world; the tropics. Biodiversity and growth rate are at levels that are unparalleled here. In simple terms, we have lots of plant and animal species with the potential to solve different problems that grow at amazing speeds. If nature was a factory, we would be the best one out there.
